100 years on the corner

the short version

  1. 1924

    Built by Arthur M. Nolder

One of nearly fifteen neighborhood grocery stores in Redlands. Its stucco building caused a stir over "over-commercialization" and helped lead to the city's planning commission and zoning plans.

  2. 1939to 1974

    Stater Complete Food Market

Run by Leo and Laboy Stater, and one of the first Stater Bros. markets.

  3. 1948

    Carl's Butcher Shop

Carl Hill ran the meat counter. His son John started working summers there at age 10.

$7.50 a week, behind the butcher counter.
  4. 2003

    Reopened as a specialty market

After a full renovation, and a fire that pushed the opening back almost a year, the market reopened on October 27, 2003.

  5. 2024

    100 years

The neighborhood celebrated a century of the market on June 8. Today it's owned and run by the Rozzi and Van Zeyl families.
